The Cinque Terre National Park includes the entire coastal area from Punta Mesco to the border with the nearby Park of Porto Venere and Palmaria to the east. The protection also extends to the marine area in front of the coast. The task of the Park Authority is to safeguard nature, but also to preserve the uniqueness of the environment transformed by man over the centuries, of which the cultivation of strips are a characteristic element.
The territory that stretches, with a jagged arch, between the promontory of Punta Mesco and Punta di Montenero on the coast of La Spezia is certainly one of the most famous and attractive stretches of coastline in Italy. The spectacular natural conformation of the coast and the charm of the colourful seaside villages clinging to the slopes of the slopes that descend to the sea make it a remarkable sight to behold.
As the ancient toponym recalls, there are five villages, or "terre", that overlook a dozen kilometres of coastline characterized by high cliffs, short pebble beaches and the steep slopes of the terraced mountains with dry stone walls. Due to their particular environmental, historical and cultural characteristics, the Cinque Terre, together with the subsequent stretch of coastline to the islands of the Gulf of La Spezia, are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. This title was granted because of the uniqueness of the territory that man over the centuries has adapted to their needs for sustenance, settling in villages and terracing the mountain, but always in deep harmony with the natural environment.
