Promontory of Portofino

from Chiappa cape to Santa Margherita

The kayak tour along the Natural Park and in the Marine Protected Area

The Park of Portofino represents a unique natural environment and a cultural testimony of great artistic and ethnographic value. Numerous sites (from the medieval testimonies, to the eighteenth-century mills up to the bunkers of the world war) have been restructured for the visit along the 80 kilometers of marked paths. The protected marine area extends around the promontory.

The promontory of Portofino, which owes its name to the fishing village of the same name, extends into the Ligurian Sea separating the eastern coastal arch of the region between the towns of Camogli and Santa Margherita.

The mountain, which reaches a maximum height of 610 meters, delimits to the west the Gulf of Paradise, while to the east surrounds the Gulf of Tigullio. The wooded northern slope joins the Apennine ridge at the Ruta pass, which acts as a watershed towards Camogli to the west and towards the wide valley above Santa Margherita to the east. The southern side of the mountain exposed to the sea is instead characterized by high cliffs surmounted by a low Mediterranean scrub alternating with maritime pines and holm oaks.

Most of the mountain falls within the Regional Natural Park, while the sea, which surrounds it on three sides, is included in the Marine Protected Area of Portofino, which extends for over 200 meters from the coast.

The spectacular nature of this environment, together with the seaside villages and the almost untouched places of art along the way, makes sailing under the coast one of the most rewarding and exciting experiences in the Ligurian Sea, and probably the entire Mediterranean. The exposure to the sea of the cliff, for long stretches very steep and without landings, however, advises particular caution and attention to changing weather and sea conditions.
